A Real Backyard Problem That Needed A Solution

My wife gets full credit for coming up with the idea that led to Sparrow-B-Gone!

Last Fall, the house sparrow problem with our four backyard feeders got so bad that she was about to give up on feeding the birds. The house sparrows were invading nests, killing other birds, and going through seed very quickly (and expensively…).

As a last resort, we decided to check with Professor Google. When we did, we quickly found references to research done back in the 90s that showed that clear fishing line surrounding bird feeders was an effective way to keep most house sparrows away from feeders.

We clipped some thin fishing line to a rain guard at the top of one of our hanging tube feeders and tied some large nuts to the bottom of the line to keep them weighted down. Consistent with the published research, this worked great, and the house sparrows avoided that feeder.

This initial approach wouldn’t work with our other feeders, but it was a good start.

I got into 3D printing a few years ago as a retirement “hobby” and quickly realized that you can solve a lot of problems with 3D printing. I was about to launch a company that would make and sell a number of innovative products, so she turned to me and said: “I bet with your 3D printing skills, you can come up with a better solution than this”, so the challenge was on. Six months and MANY
prototype versions later, Sparrow-B-Gone! was born!
